The Benefits of Cognitive Skills Training

Ninety percent of the students that come to me for help in decoding, fluency and reading comprehension also show signs of needing help with cognitive skills. General processing speed, memory and attention skills often need improvement. For example they may need help specifically with working memory…..or selected, divided, or sustained attention. Deficiencies in these areas can adversely affect reading, but also impede a student’s ability to quickly process math operations, take notes effectively in class, or do well on tests. Lagging behind, caused by a slower pace keeps the student from absorbing current information that is constantly being sent their way. Many lose hope and motivation quickly once they have tried and failed to get back on track. It can be an endless cycle.
Through a series of drills that include beat, rhythm, timing and pacing, improvement in processing speed can be seen within the very first session. From there we take off, constantly increasing the intensity and complexity of drills. Because sessions are private, I am able to modify and personalize methods immediately to meet the responses each student presents.
Many parents look for help by obtaining academic tutoring in school subject material. Sometimes that is precisely what a student requires. However, more often than not, underdeveloped underlying cognitive skills are the problem. I think my students enjoy our time together because it feels more like they are working with a coach, and the drills are just that…….drills not studies.
Working on these skills in combination with the phonemic awareness through auditory processing training really does help these students obtain great results. I am happy when my students are happy, and their parents are too!
