Seems
simple doesn't it?
But is it? Here
is a basic example:
A student may look at the letter "e" and vocally produce /a/, the phonetic sound most often heard for the letter "a." He may see the letter "a" and vocally produce /u/, the phonetic sound most often heard for the letter "u." These subtle inconsistencies cause a problem with decoding ability in reading.
In addition, the numerous spelling arrangements in the English language present another area that students struggle with.
Here is a another basic example: Let's look at the letter arrangement, "ou." Would that be /ou/ as in "cloud", /u/ as in "touch", /oo/ as in "soup", or /u-e/ as in "youth?"
